"The Drunkard" is one of the most produced plays in The Backstage Theatre's 35 year
history.
In this new adaptation (written by Backstage Theatre artistic director Christopher
Willard), Edward Middleton is a young temperance leader led on a wild fall from grace by
Lawyer Cribbs, a dishonest solicitor bent on destroying Middleton to gain possession of his
inheritance and to win the hand of the innocent and beautiful Mary Warren.
It's the stuff of
classic "boo/hiss" melodrama given a hysterically goofy and sweetly affecting spin.
The show is helmed by guest director Rick Bernstein, Co-Artistic Director of Miners Alley Theatre in Golden.
"The Drunkard" will begin rehearsals in June, 2009. Rehearsals will primarily be weekends,
but there is some flexibility with schedules of the actors.
Performances are alternating weekends beginning July 16 thru August 16, 2009. All positions are paid.

- LAWYER CRIBBS (30's to 60's): corrupt solicitor with designs on young Mary and the Middleton estate
